Prague: Europe's Most Affordable Capital City

January 16, 2026

Prague is often called the most beautiful city in Europe, and it's certainly one of the most affordable. With its fairy-tale Old Town, stunning Charles Bridge, and beer that costs less than water, Prague delivers an incredible travel experience at a fraction of the cost of Western European capitals.

Getting There

Václav Havel Airport (PRG) serves Prague with connections across Europe. Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet offer frequent budget flights from €20-40 one way. From Central Europe, Flixbus is another ultra-cheap option at €10-25. Use Flajt.com to find the best flight deals from your region.

Where to Stay

Prague offers outstanding accommodation value. Hostels in the center start at €12-18/night, and boutique hotels can be found for €50-80/night. Stay in Žižkov or Vinohrady for lower prices and a more authentic local experience — both are just a 10-minute tram ride from the Old Town Square.

Must-See Attractions

Walking across Charles Bridge at sunrise, with mist rising from the Vltava River and Prague Castle gleaming above, is one of Europe's most magical free experiences. Other highlights:

  • Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock (free to watch the hourly show)
  • Prague Castle grounds — free to walk through the courtyards and gardens
  • Petřín Hill — panoramic views and beautiful gardens, free to explore
  • John Lennon Wall — a colorful tribute that's become a Prague icon
  • Vyšehrad fortress — ancient castle with stunning river views, completely free

Beer and Food

Czech beer is legendary and incredibly cheap. A half-liter of excellent local beer costs just €1.50-2.50 at a neighborhood pub. Try Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, or lesser-known gems like Kozel and Bernard.

Traditional Czech food is hearty and wallet-friendly: svíčková (marinated beef with cream sauce and dumplings, €6-8), vepřo-knedlo-zelo (roast pork with sauerkraut and dumplings, €5-7), and trdelník (chimney cake, €3-4). For the best value, eat at local "hospoda" (pubs) away from the tourist center.

Getting Around

A 30-minute public transport ticket costs just €1.10, and a 24-hour pass is €4.70 — some of the cheapest in Europe. The tram network is excellent and scenic, particularly tram 22 which passes many major sights.

Best Time to Visit

May-June and September offer ideal weather. December brings magical Christmas markets. A weekend in Prague can cost as little as €150-250 per person including flights! Start searching on Flajt.com.
